A Simple Guide: Overcoming Dental Anxiety


Dentophobia, or a fear of the dentist, is extremely common. Statistics suggest that around 12% of us suffer from extreme dental anxiety. The British Dental Association says that 25% of the UK population suffer from some sort of anxiety before visiting the dentist. We suspect that this number is a lot higher.

The most common thing we encounter in our nervous patients is embarrassment. Time and time again we hear ‘I’m sorry my teeth are such a mess’, or ‘I must be your most nervous patient.’ You are absolutely not, and your phobia is nothing to feel shame and embarrassment about. A phobia is a very rational reaction to pain and fear.

The term ‘phobia’ is derived from the Greek word ‘phobos’, meaning ‘flight’, ‘panic-fear’, and ‘terror’. According to an article published by the BBC, a phobia is much greater than an anxiety or a fear:

‘It is an excessive fear of a particular type of object or situation that sufferers then try to avoid at all costs. This kind of fear is often exaggerated and disabling.’

This can have a very damaging effect on your long-term health. Dental phobics tend to live with toothache, infections, bleeding gums, and bad breath. Many people are so embarrassed about the appearance of their teeth, that they go several years without smiling. Only when the pain/embarrassment becomes unbearable, do they accept that a trip to the dentist is unavoidable.

This is not uncommon and you are not alone. Across dentistry as a whole, phobias are now being treated as a manageable condition. There are structured methods in place to help you get through your dental appointment with minimal discomfort, both physically and emotionally.

1. Talk to us
As with any phobia, the most important step to overcoming your fear is to identify the source of the problem. It may have been a bad experience at the school dentist, an uncomfortable injection, or even a horror story that you heard elsewhere. Whatever the reason, the most important step is to identify this. Our clinicians and treatment coordinators encourage you to talk about your fears. All new patient consultations begin with a relaxed discussion with a dedicated treatment coordinator in a comfortable meeting room. We take the time to get to know you and understand your anxieties. We will take whatever steps we need to help you overcome your fear, and your coordinator is available to support you at your appointments.

2. Headphones
Plenty of patients report that their biggest bugbear is the sound of the dental drill. Many people choose to bring in some music and their headphones, which they listen to throughout their treatment. This is a very simple and easy method to reduce your anxiety, and get you through your dental appointment.

3. Topical anaesthetic gel
For those of you who are scared of the dental needle, did you know we offer topical anaesthetic gel? Topical gel is applied to the gum before your injection is administered, making it much more comfortable.

4. Stagger your treatment
We understand for many phobic patients, a bigger treatment plan can be quite overwhelming (if not downright off-putting). We encourage patients to stage their treatment in a way that best suits their needs. Starting out with easier, simpler treatments and working your way up to more comprehensive treatment can be a great way to ease yourself into your dental care.

5. Take yourself away
In our state-of-the-art surgeries, we have TV’s in the ceiling to keep you entertained throughout your appointment. Our clinicians and nurses are trained to the highest standards and ensure you are calm and relaxed throughout treatment while you lay back, relax, and watch some TV.

6. Sedation
Sedation is a very popular treatment option at Smylife. From patients with extreme phobias to patients who simply struggle to feel relaxed, sedation is a fantastic option. Sedation dentistry uses medication to help patients relax in the dental chair. Intravenous (IV) sedation (conscious sedation) is available at Smylife. It is a very accurate and controlled method of sedation, which allows us to continually adjust the level of sedation medication being used, ensuring you stay calm and relaxed throughout your appointment.

7. Trust us
